installing updates for four hours

I have just installed an anti-virus program on my Fijitsu Siemens with Vista
Home premium and the computerstarted to re-start to complete the
installation. It didn't get that far. The text on the screen says (but in
Swedish) "Do not turn off the computer. Installing updates 22 of 31.." It's
said that for four hours now. Have tried to make it run out of battery and
then re-start, without success. Does anyone know what to do?

You had updates pending to be installed. Yet, you installed an antivirus
program in the interim that required a reboot.

WOW! You may have set your computer up for some major conflicts. They may,
in fact, never be sorted out. I would suggest you just allow the system to
continue as it is in hope that everything will be sorted. I have seen this
last many hours.

If there is no disk activity to indicate it is doing something try holding
the power button in until it turns off and then restart it.

You obnoxious bastard, how do you expect an ordinary user to know this
in advance. This is typical of your bloody attitude, no useful
information to add because "You" don't have an answer, so attempt to
drive the user away. People come here hoping for a little help, many
having realized already that they may have made an error, this one being
somewhat related to Microsoft's policy of "Foisting" updates on users
whether they are ready or not. I bet the AV docs the user read said
nothing about waiting for updates or checking for cached updates before
installing.

Yes there's a "Punk" here, but it's not the user, and you better hope
you never have the misfortune to insult me in that manner face to face.

Frida,

Press the power button down until it goes off.
Then, you might want to try booting into Safe Mode by tapping the F8 key
just after system start up (start tapping the F8 after the BIOS info screen disappears).

You can try two things;
At the "Safe Mode" screen, use the arrow down key to get to
"Last Known Good Configuration (most recent settings that worked)",
and then press enter.

Or, at the "Advanced Boot Options" screen, "Safe Mode" should
be highlighted as the first option, press enter. Then try running
"System Restore", using a restore point before this happened.

Charlie, a lot of MVPs can be condescending... it's a shame.
Frida is probably overwhelmed right now, and not nearly the
advanced user that Richard is.... too bad some MVPs don't have
a more advanced understanding on how *not* to be so arrogant.

I take it that the term "Advanced User" when applied to Richard is a joke.

I think we all know that Adam, Frank and some others are arguing between
themselves, something a newcomer should spot in a couple of posts, but
for people using the MVP sig to openly insult someone who is probably
new here and obviously somewhat upset already is nothing short of
deplorable.

OTOH it's their credibility that will suffer here where we see it
repeated, as Richard's and Carey's has recently.
