No, you cannot install SUA on any Home Edition of Vista, Premium or Basic.

For reasons of unimaginable greed or stupidity, Microsoft decided to make
SUA a feature of Ultimate and Enterprise Editions only.

You can download the SUA SDK; but without the POSIX Subsystem, it is
useless.

The best workaround is to run the free download of Services for Unix 3.5, on
XP. If necessary, you can run up XP inside a Virtual PC VM, running on
Vista.
Download Virtual PC from here:

Virtual PC 2007
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/virtualpc/default.mspx

and download Services for Unix 3.5 from here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...88-601b-44f1-81a4-02878ff11778&displaylang=en

You need to provide the XP licence. Otherwise, it's all free.

In case you're wondering - no, SFU 3.5 will not run, on Vista. It just
doesn't work at all.

I really, really wish I had a better solution for you, but ... well,
Microsoft has shot itself in the foot, and buggered the rest of us at the
same time.

A semi-workable Unix-like solution for Windows is Cygwin:
http://www.cygwin.com/
Personally I find SUA a far superior solution to Cygwin; but since Microsoft
has spat in the face of Unix users by restricting access to SUA, Cygwin may
be a useful alternative.

Sorry for the bad news.

First of all, what is SUA? Check the developers website to find out about
Vista Compatibility and support, patches or new releases that enable support
under Vista.

"Subsystem for Unix Applications" (SUA) is bundled with Ultimate and
Enterprise editions only.

Additionally, a large package (200+ Mb) of files in .exe format is
available on MS website for users to download and integrate with their
OS. This core package is what provides true Unix functionality.

I highly doubt that package would install on anything but Ultimate or
Enterprise.

Ahh, thats only in the Enterprise and Ultimate Editions of Windows Vista.

No. You cannot install SUA on any Homed Edition on Vista - Premium or Basic.
For reasons of unimaginable greed or stupidity, Microsoft decided to only
include SUA with Enterprise and Ultimate Editions of Vista. You can
download the SUA SDK from the Microsoft website, but without the POSIX
subsystem installed in Windows, it is useless.

The only workaround I can suggest, is to run Services for Unix 3.5 (which is
a free download) on Windows XP, possibly in an XP VM running in Virtual PC
(also free).

You can download Virtual PC from here:
Virtual PC 2007
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/virtualpc/default.mspx

and Services for Unix 3.5 from here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...88-601b-44f1-81a4-02878ff11778&displaylang=en

You still need to supply an XP licence - the rest is free.

Services for Unix is highly compatible with SUA, you can move code, scripts
and binaries back and forth with no problems. In case you're wondering,
though: no, you cannot run SFU 3.5 on Vista - it just refuses to load.

Another alternative is Cygwin, a 3rd party Unix-like environment for
Windows. I actually think SFU and SUA are far superior to Cygwin. But since
Microsoft has decided to shoot itself, and the rest of us, in the feet by
restricting access to Cygwin, it may be a useful alternative"

Sorry I didn't have better news for you. FWIW on Vista Ultimate SUA runs
great! and provides a very comfortable Unix environment to work in.

Aww c'mon ... you're kidding, right? Everyone knows Subsystem for Unix
Applications!

It is one of the most useful feature in Windows. It is also a feature of
Windows Server 2003, and Server 2008.

Through immense, unfathomable stupidity Microsoft decided to only supply SUA
with Vista Enterprise and Ultimate editions. The XP equivalent, Services for
Unix 3.5, ran on every edition of XP.
