Installing over an existing XP installation

I've been using an old computer that has an installation of Windows XP VLK
that has since expired and does not allow me to update my computer. Is it
possible for me to install a retail version of Windows XP Professional
without losing/messing any of my current programs/settings currently
installed?

Just to make sure I understand... I can use a retail version of Windows XP
Pro to repair an installation of Windows XP Corporation(VLK) without losing

Yes, data and settings are safe during a Repair Installation..
But it is always a good idea to have back-ups of important data just in case
