installing on windows xp profesional

if i try to install anything on my laptop running windows
xp pro, the cd loads, but when i click on the install
button, nothinh happens, and it locks up. Has anyone any
ideas.
 
Hi Tracy,

Common installation problems are usually cured by restarting the machine,
then....

1) Delete the contents of the temp folders, there may be a file in there
interfering with the setup routine of the installer. Get both:

C:\Windows\temp
C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\local settings\temp

2) Turn off all other running programs, especially your antivirus software.
Use ctrl+shift+escape, if necessary, to "end task" on everything.
