Installing old hard drives in new computer

dave

My old motherboard crashed so I replaced computer with a
new system with 80 gig hd using windows xp. My old hard
drives used Windows 2000 Pro. Can I simply switch out
the new hard drive (C) with the old hard drive then
install the new hard drive as E? Will I have to reformat
E with Windows 2000 or are they compatible enough to use
both operating systems?

How do I install Windows 2000 after I've installed XP?

Dave,

lots of potential problems here. You could try it, but I would
recommend to keep Windows XP and the new hard disk in the new
computer.

Why don't you add your old hard disk to the new computer?

Keeping the old installation including installed software and
settings would be difficult. I'd rather reinstall everything
that can be reinstalled and attempt to transplant the rest,
which involves exporting and importing registry settings.

If you don't want to heed this advice but would still want to
keep your old installation, please read
