Installing Office

I have a new HP computer and want to install the new
version I have for Office Small business 2003. I just
bought it and have it on another computer in my home for
my kids. I understood that we could buy one software
package for two computers. Right?

Look at the licence - some versions of office you can install on one PC and
one laptop - I don't think this applies to ALL office versions.

I know it is legal to install one copy of Microsoft Office XP on both your
desktop and your laptop. I imagine that Office Small Business 2003 has the
same rule as Office XP, but you should make sure. Try a Google search.

Just for your information in case you didn't know, all of the Microsoft
operating systems are legal on ONLY one computer. If you want the OS on
another machine, you must buy another copy of the OS, or at least buy
another license for the OS.

The Small Business Edition of Office is considered OEM and can only be
installed and activated on a single PC and once activated, is forever tied
to that PC.

If you have a PC in your home that your children use, it might be worth
considering the Microsft Office for Students and Teachers for that PC.

Not quite. There is a concession in respect of Office, but it allows
the owner of a desktop machine to install a retail copy also onto a
laptop one for his personal use. It doesn't sound as if the setup you
propose could be stretched to fit that

Greetings --

In the past, the Microsoft Office retail license did permit the
product to be installed upon one desktop PC and one portable computer
simultaneously, provided that the individual who purchased the license
was the primary user of both machines. The License did not permit the
product to be simultaneously installed upon two desktop PCs (or two
laptops, for that matter) that were regularly used by different
people.

Also, in the past, Office Small Business Edition was available
_only_ as a pre-installed OEM product, permanently bound to the PC
with which it was purchased. The latest version, Office SME 2003, is
available as a retail product, so the dual-installation _may_ be
permitted, but read the EUAL to be sure.
