I hav installed Office 97 on XP home without incident. I did not install
Outlook 97, since that is incompatible with XP, meaning that it fails to
work, not that it should kill XP. Note that before using Office I also
installed SP-2 for Office 97.
As for your problem, it is rare that XP will permit a vital system file to
be over-written. XP is suppoed to place the conflicting DLL in a separate
directory and assign it only to the newly installed program. This is a
major improvment over windows 98 etc. However, no one ever said that XP was
perfect.
Suggestions: (1) to fix XP, do a "repair" installation, then run windows
update to re-download/re-install a bunch of patches. See links below about
repairing XP. (2) Before installing Office 97 again, run CHKDSK with the /F
option; also, turn off all other software, including you virus scanner; be
sure that you have adequate free space.

The first time I used my new computer (uses Windows XP Pro) I tried to
install Office 97 Professional. I got an error message that files Windows
needed to run had been overwritten and to insert the Windows setup disk.
Before all was done I had a catistrophic crash of Windows. It sounds like a
..dll file was overwritten. Does anyone know if this could have happened? I
keep hearing that Office 97 runs fine in Windows XP but can't find anyone
who has installed it onto a system with this operating system. Has anyone
done it? I don't understand why it crashed. Needless to say I've been
afraid to try the install again. Any comments would be appreciated. JeanP
