Installing OEM XP Over Win98

Sorry if this has been answered already. I've looked quite a while over
this forum but could not find an answer to this:

I have a OEM version of Windows XP; I'd like to install it on a system in
which I currently have Windows 98. (It may be SE, but I'm not sure.)

So, what is the easiest way to accomplish this task? Can I merely install
it over the Windows 98? I've read something on another post talking about a
"Clean Install". Is that necessary? I'd appreciate any help anyone can
give me on this. Thanks.

An OEM disc can only be used to perform a clean installation - it cannot be
used to upgrade a previous version.

OEM versions of Windows will not upgrade an existing O/S... so you will have
to do a clean install which will involve losing all the data currently on
the drive. Remember to backup anything you need to keep... and do NOT use
MSBackup, it's not compatible with NTBackup (which comes with XP) XP CANNOT
read the qic files from MSBackup.

Another option is to install XP in a separate partition and keep your
Win98 in a dual boot configuration. Then you can migrate the Win98
applications and data to XP at your leisure. That is what I did with
an OEM XP. At first, I almost always booted to Win98, then over
several weeks time, I was booting to XP more and more. Now I rarely
ever boot to Win98.
