WinXP Pro SP2 OEM won't install...

I'm currently running WinME (over Win98) on my PC and want to install WinXP,
which I've recently purchased as an OEM version, officially licensed with
COA, totally legit.

For some unknown reason, the XP install goes smoothly until it reaches the
"Welcome to Windows Setup" blue screen, at which point the PC totally
switches off. It's exactly as if I've hit the restart button, but the
computer stays off instead of restarting. No error message, no notification,
just KLICK and that's all.

Since I'm trying to install an OEM version of XP, I've wiped the HDD to do a
clean install, ran fdisk, reformatted the C: drive, taken out every
perhipheral that's been installed, flashed my BIOS (which is XP compatible)
and even checked the CPU fan and exhaust for dust bunny blockage. Nothing
helps, and it's not a random thing. The exact thing happens at the exact same
point in the install every time.

Is there something I'm missing here? I'm thinking that it must be something
in my BIOS, some setting I'm missing? I'm not a superuser tech deluxe when it
comes to this, but I pride myself in trying to learn as much as I can so I
can be as self-sufficient as possible, not to mention being able to help
others as a result.

I'm hoping that someone (anyone!) can help me out with this. I'm posting
this from work so I don't have the tech specs on my PC, but I'm happy to
supply the info in a follow up post if anyone needs it.

Thanx!

There are OEM versions that are normally sold with new
computers (or, occasionally, with qualifying computer
parts) and then there are OEM versions that are bios-
locked to specific manufacturer of computer, such as Dell,
eMachines, etc. Just which OEM version did you obtain?
They all come with a COA but the branded OEM Windows XP
will not install in the non-branded motherboard/machine.

Why fool with a oem version of xp,get a retail upgrade version of xp....
Either way,can oem boot to the xp cd,if so (set cdrom with xp installed as
1st
boot device),at xp cd boot menu, select recovery,in recovery type:
DiskPart,in DiskPart,delete thepartition,create one,then press Esc key,then
type:
EXIT Reboot to xp cd,select, install xp,create a partition, then let xp
format and
install. If no recovery is available, download the hd MS-DOS utility for the
floppy,
boot to floppy, delete partition(s),then wipe it clean, exit.Boot to
xp,create partition.

How are you running the XP install? Are you booting with the OEM CD
and letting it run from there or are you booting the computer with a
startup disk and then running the setup program on the CD?

This has the indications of being a hardware problem rather than
something in the installation software.

Do you still have your Windows Me installation CD? What happens if
you boot with that CD and start the Windows Me installation?

Also you might try deleting the hard drive partition and then booting
from the Windows XP installation CD. It should give you the option of
partitioning and formatting the hard drive and then go into the
install.

Good luck

OEM has nothing to do with his problem, generic OEM's are exactly the same
as Retail when clean installing. This a hardware issue. Possibly memory
since everything else has been addressed.

Memory would be a great place to start. However, a while back I came
across the same problem. I replaced memory and still the same result.
For some reason I used a different keyboard and the install worked
perfectly.
