Hi

Grim Fandango won't install on my XP PC. I'm sure all my drivers etc are up
to date and the CD seems ok - i can run the game from the CD but not install
it.

I can see wowexec.exe, setup.exe and ntvdm.exe in task manager after I click
install, but nothing happens. When i cancel the processes, i get a message
about the 16 bit subsystem being unstable / timing out.

When i go to shut down after trying to install, i get a message about a
program called "O" that needs to be ended - dunno what this is...?

I have tried all the compatibility functions with no success.

Any ideas?

Cheers

John

First of all try Start->Run, type sysedit.exe and hit OK, just to make sure
the 16-bit-subsystem is still functional. (Sysedit is the only program I
know of, that still ships with Windows, but has never been updated since
Windows 3.0)

If you can still run other 16-bit apps (such as Sysedit), the problem you
described is InstallShield related. Unfortunately LucasArts used
InstallShield3 for Grim Fandango, which was already outdated then.
InstallShield3 uses a 16-bit setup launcher that launches the 32-bit setup
application. That often causes trouble.

I would recommend the following:
- Make sure you are logged in with Administrator privileges when installing
Grim Fandango
- Close any other applications
- Delete all files from the \windows\temp and \documents and settings\<your
user name>\local settings\temp\ folders that can be deleted.

Grim installed correctly for me! I'm running Windows XP Pro with DirectX 9
and SP 1.

Only one problem with Grim: The in-game movies sometimes creates stuttering
moves.

I have XP home - might this be the prob?

Can run sysedit ok - so must have installshield problem....

is it possible to manually install the game or download a newer version of
installshield?

Did you empty your Temp folders and it still did not work?

You could try copying the entire installation CD-ROM to your hard disk and
replace the 16-bit setup launcher (setup.exe) with a 32-bit one from any
newer installation that uses InstallShield 5. Sometimes this works.

Do you have the patch that updates Grim Fandango to version 1.01 installed?

It still didn't work after emptying my temp folder.

Where could i get a newer installer?

Is it possible to install the files any other way?
