Installing games that ran under Windows 98

John

On installing Strategy Games of the World on Windows XP
Pro, I got a consistent message "MFC30.dll not found"
which prevented installation from the CD - prevented the
setup file from running. I've gotten similar messages on
another occassion when I tried to install an older
program. Using the Compatibility Wizard didn't help.

Is this a common problem in installing older programs,
and is there a solution? Thanks.

Hi John,

Are those DOS based games perhaps then?

When a game is a DOS game, it could work using compatibility mode:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=292533 or by using the Multiboot
bootdisk from: http://members.ozemail.com.au/~lpcd/downloads.html .

With DOSBOX you can emulate a DOS computer on your XP desktop:
http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/information.php

If you prefer to explore other advanced methods, here are two of the best
tutorials I've found on the subject: http://www.dosgames.com/xphints.php
and: http://home.earthlink.net/~angeldancer27/XpGameList.htm :)
