Installing Flash 7

I recently bought a new computer from Gateway. As received I got the error
message that Macromedia Flash Version 7 or later was required for some of the
content, when starting the program Encarta.

I tried repairing Encarta as directed only to get following error.

Macromedia Flash Player inf Install Failure
Reason Unknown

No new version was installed.

I then went to Macromedia and tried to install Flash 7 there. At the web
page it went thru the motions of installing the new version but it did not
end up on my computer.
I then downloaded an install from Macromedia to my computer for Flash 7.
When I ran it I got.

Macromedia Flash Player inf Install Failure
Reason : Unknown

As I was scanning the messages here I ran across one from faith_in_missouri
giving a web download to get a zip file with flash 7 in it. I downloaded it,
unzipped it and decompressed it with Winzip. Sure enough it was swflash.ocx
ver 7.0.

Since none of the installs worked and flash was busted on my computer, I
decided to try something to see if I could get the ocx installed manually.

I made sure that no program was running that could be using Flash.

I renamed Flash version 6.0 in the Macromed\flash directory Flash6.ocx.

I copied the Flash 7 to Macromed\flash directory and renamed it from
swflash.ocx to flash.ocx.

I then started Encarta to see if it worked. Sure enough Encarta saw the new
version number and started without any error message and all of the
multimedia items that require flash now run.

I hope this is of help to anyone with similar problems. I can only say that
Macromedia and Microsoft better do a better job on their installs. When you
can manually do something on your computer that their installs cannot there
is something missing in their efforts.

Now back to Microsoft Fax and why it won't install ....

Were you trying to install Flash (or Fax) as a "Limited" type user account?

Have you tried the "Administrator" account??

Yves,
Obviously I was not in a "limited" type account and I know the difference. I
could not have done all that I described if I was not logged on with
Administrator privileges. I also know that poorly written inf installs cause
much grief for computer users and administrators. Take it for what it is
worth. I am doing things correctly on my end. How about the people who are
writing the installs.
