Installing English windows onto a Japanese PC

I bought a laptop in Japan, but I want to install English windows onto it. It
currently has Windows XP home edition installed in Japanese, and I know I
need to buy the English version in order to change the language. I went to a
computer shop to buy the software and I was advised against doing it as some
of the drivers may not recognise the English version of XP. I was told I
would need to order new drivers before installing English Windows. Is this
correct? I've been reading through other discussions about changing the
language and nothing has been mentioned about drivers. If I do need new
drivers how do I go about doing that? I have no idea what drivers I would
need and don't know how to find out. Any advice would be apprecated. Thank
you.

Visit the support website of the manufacturer of your laptop
and search for the English version of Windows XP drivers.
If they are available, then there is no reason why you cannot
reformat your hard drive, install the English version of Windows
XP, then install the drivers.

Follow this procedure:

The Windows XP CD is bootable and contains all the tools necessary
to partition and format your drive. Follow this procedure and allow
Windows XP to partition and format your drive:

NOTE: It would be best to physically disconnect all your peripheral hardware
devices, except the monitor, mouse and keyboard, before installing XP.

NOTE: If you have an internal Zip Drive installed, physically disconnect the
EIDE and power cable to it before proceeding, otherwise your main
hard drive may not be assigned the customary C: drive letter.
After installing Windows XP, you may then reconnect it.

1. Open your BIOS and set your "CD Drive as the first bootable device".

2. Insert your Windows XP CD in the CD Drive and reboot your computer.
3. You'll see a message to boot to the CD....follow the instructions.
4. The setup menu will appear and you should elect to delete all the existing
Windows partitions, then create a new partition, then format the primary
partition (preferably NTFS) and proceed to install Windows XP.

5. Clean Install Windows XP

6. ==> Immediately after installing Windows XP, turn on XP's Firewall.

7. After Windows XP is installed, visit the Windows Update website
and download the available "Critical Updates".

8. After installing the critical updates, be sure and visit the support website
of the manufacturer of the computer to download and install any
available Windows XP compatible drivers, such as video adapter
and audio drivers.

What keyboard layout do you have?

Make sure that the English version of XP is compatible with the keyboard
layout or else you'll have some small confusion with special characters and
their location. These include: ~, #, $, {, }, [, ], :, ;, ", ' and so on.

As for drivers, it is unlikely that any PC made today doesn't have XP driver
files available on the manufacturers web pages.

I've done this several times with Sony notebooks bought in Hong Kong or
Tokyo which were initially running XP Japanese OS.
I simply re-formatted the hard drive and booted from CD-ROM containing XP
Pro US version. The only special care I had to take was selecting the
appropriate keyboard driver (as the notebooks did come with a Japanese
keyboard).
I never had any problems with device drivers. Infact, some notebooks use
drivers pulled from Sony's Japanese support site.
