Installing (downloaded) optional software/hardware updates .

Greetings To The Community And MVP's In Particular ,

I run XP Home (SP2) and Office 2003 Pro with BCM (both complete with all
updates etc.) , but need to pose this "simple" question .
Since Microsoft has no longer made it possible to manually download AND
INSTALL from the update.microsoft.com site - manual downloads , yes but
automatically installing them = "running" from the site is no longer
supported , I have had to switch to automatic updating which is not my
preferred choice as it sometimes will then automatically restart my computer
(whilst busy with very delicate material) .

The reason for switching to automatic update is simply because I do not know
where the "High Priority Updates" are downloaded to on my computer - THIS
REFERS IN PARTICULAR to manually downloaded "Optional software/hardware
updates" .
I don't know where to look .

As automatic update also (to my limited knowledge thus far) can't select
Optional software/hardware updates , I would very much appreciate being
informed as to where downloaded files including downloaded Optional files are
kept - then I can happily go back to manual updating and installing - as I
now have Optional Software/Hardware updates "downloaded ready to install" .

And if Automatic Update could be configured to also include 'the Optional
files' - how is this accomplished ?

Truly appreciative for the expertise ,
Greetings , Karel .

Why can't you select CUSTOM for your updates at the Windows Update site?

You can also do it on the office update site.

Leythos ,

Selecting CUSTOM means a manual update - this is not my problem neither is
it the question .

Perhaps my text confuses you , I don't know - I tried to be as explicit as
possible without writing an essay .
Thus , selecting CUSTOM I can do ( = manual update ) but as MS no longer
allows/supports INSTALLING ( = running ) the manual/custom downloads from
their Update site - I need to do this from my laptop .
I simply cannot find , no matter how I search or where I search ( including
the support groups ) , WHERE these files have been downloaded to .

Currently there are two " Optional Updates " already downloaded , by way of
custom/manual download , and " ready to install " - which is my problem :
where are these already downloaded files waiting to be installed ?

Hope this clarifies my problem .

Highest regards , Karel .
