3rd Time Request - MVP's Pls Assist - Installing (dl'd) optional s

Greetings To The Community And MVP's In Particular ,

I run XP Home (SP2) and Office 2003 Pro with BCM (both complete with all
updates etc.) , but need to pose this "simple" question .
Since Microsoft has no longer made it possible to manually download AND
INSTALL from the update.microsoft.com site - manual downloads , yes but
automatically installing them = "running" from the site is no longer
supported , I have had to switch to automatic updating which is not my
preferred choice as it sometimes will then automatically restart my computer
(whilst busy with very delicate material) .

The reason for switching to automatic update is simply because I do not know
where the "High Priority Updates" are downloaded to on my computer - THIS
REFERS IN PARTICULAR to manually downloaded "Optional software/hardware
updates" .
I don't know where to look .

As automatic update also (to my limited knowledge thus far) can't select
Optional software/hardware updates , I would very much appreciate being
informed as to where downloaded files including downloaded Optional files are
kept - then I can happily go back to manual updating and installing - as I
now have Optional Software/Hardware updates "downloaded ready to install" .

And if Automatic Update could be configured to also include 'the Optional
files' - how is this accomplished ?

Truly appreciative for the expertise ,
Greetings , Prince .

You can ask it to check for updates, then manually select
the updates you like to install. You can uninstall them
from the ADD/Remove Programs in Control panel.

I don't really know what you're asking to do here. If you don't want
automatic installation, select "download and notify". When installing,
choose Custom. Why are you worried about where they're being downloaded *to*
?

If this isn't what you're looking for, try posting in
microsoft.public.windowsupdate - with more concise info on your real goal
here.

Ted ,

Please read My Question carefully as your response doesn't address my
problem .
I know all about checking for updates etc - thus manual operations , but my
question is ' where are the manually downloaded files , especially the
optional software/hardware files , downloaded to on the computer ? '

Finding these manual or optional downloaded files would enable me to install
them manually and no , please don't refer to Add/Remove Programs in Control
Panel as the downloaded ( but not yet installed ) files cannot be found there
, if only it were so easy .

Microsoft's Update site when doing a ' Check ' informs me regarding optional
update files " downloaded ready to install " - I can't find them ? !

Prince, I don't know for sure, but when you run Windows Update, it
would seem logical that it would download the files to your temp
directory, install them, and then remove them, much like any other web
based installer. So you probably aren't going to be able to find where
Windows Update puts those files. However, if you know the name of the
update, you can more than likely find the download on MS's website.
They keep standalone downloads of updates for people like network
admins who need the files to rollout to their workstations.

Lanwench ,

This isn't helping me unfortunately , I'll try to be even more concise .
My experience has been as I have written ( please read the above-mentioned ) ;
Selecting " download and notify " only gives me the " High Priority ( =
Security & Critical Updates ) Updates - " not the Optional Hardware/Software
Updates .

I'm not worried about anything but I would like to learn " that if you
select to download & install Custom Updates ( = Optional Hardware/Softare
Updates ) , this being a non-automatic and therefore manual operation , WHERE
are these files downloaded to " , THUS enabling me to manually install them .

You simply cannot download and automatically install Custom Updates from MS
Update site ( you used to be able to but now you can't ) whereas if you
choose to manully download the High Priority Updates , these are first
downloaded and then automatically installed .

I'm willing to try your suggestion , again , but I hope this is concise
enough - and I have also posted this in the Windows Update group , but no
reply ( save 1 ) of any value even though there are quite a few people
interested in my question and have found my formulation to be helpful , this
being additional info .

Sincerely hopes this helps , Prince .

Jim ,

Thanks for your response but the ' situation ' is exactly what normally
takes place , in this respect that it applies to the High Priority Updates .
When I ' check ' using Microsoft's Update site it informs me that I have 2
Optional Hardware/Software Updates " downloaded ready to install " .
I'm rather bewildered as to where these files are as I can't find them thus
I wouldn't know how to install what I can't see .

Sincerely hopes this helps , Prince .

Still don't know WTF you are talking about.

Any updates downloaded thru Windows, Automatic, or Microsoft Updates
have always been downloaded to you computer first, then installed from
your computer. This has not changed. Your premise is false.

Never download driver updates via WU.

I'm still honestly rather puzzled as to what it is you wish to accomplish
here.

I think he just wants to be able to download something like an .exe
file and install it manually.

I have NO earthly idea why one would want to do this, or what
difference it makes...

Cut out the middleman code, that adds another layer of code that can
fail during the patching process.

Though I didn't get that from his posts.
IF it WERE possible...

you would run the executable file... only to do the exact same thing
.. which is:

the file is executed and the system files built into the exe are sent
to their intended paths and the file will simply OVERWRITE the current
file, to make them newer... which is the current AUTOMATED process of
updating.

Given that information... I assume that Prince wants to have the
system files in any given folder and be able to disperse them to
their intended paths .. manually.. and confirm the "overwrite current
file" ....

Thats about all I gathered from any of his posts.

Its all a guess as he doesn't make much sense at all.

But if he really is looking for a way to manually download updates, then
there are many ways to do it.

Having read the responses in this thread I do believe what you are asking for
is not being understood.

I believe I know what you want. I am however unfamiliar with XP Home
Edition so I am not sure what my advice will actually mean to you.

You want to separately run the patchs on your computer. Both critical and
general updates.

I recently have had some troubles with updates through the site. I
downloaded the KB patches directly and have them stored on my computer. I
then ran each patch independant of the site for purposes of discovering the
reason I was still getting prompted for the same updates each time I went to
the update site. The patches are available separately. Although others
sounded like they didn't understand why you were wanting this, there are many
reasons why. In our organization, we download the patches, test install them
and determine the impact of the patch on our environment prior to sending
these update to ALL machines and creating huge problems. Not overly valid in
a home situtation but if you have multiple machines you might want to try it
on one first and then maybe.

The site uses a directory under the Windows directory called
softwaredistribution. The inner working of this directory are not that
imporant but the results of an update are logged in the Windows directory.
KBxxxxxxx.log is the detail of the patch being applied. It is here where I
started to understand why my system wasn't functioning correctly. Each patch
installs a set of files. Some of these files are system files in use at the
time of the update. To effectively replace them the system has to schedule
the rename of the files on reboot. In the log file you will notice that
there are certain lines that indicate the (delayed) rename of the file. It
places the file in the system32 directory as a tmp file.... SETxx.tmp If
you right click on these files you can check they internal name, version etc.

I hope this diatrib helps you in understanding some of the update process.

If you want to download the patches, locate the MS Security Baseline
Analyzer 2.0. It also uses the Microsoft Update site which was a failing in
the past. Effectively if you really wanted to, you could put your Automatic
Updates on Notify. When you are notified, you could run the baseline
analyzer, download the patch and patch your computer. The update site
notifications will stop if the update is successful.

All he needs is the ability to download the patch manually
and place in a directory, install them when finds the best time
to install them.
There should be a place for administrators to be able to download
those patches, but I doubt they are available. MS priority and all
they care about is only legal OS to be updated.

You can always download manually any patch you want provided you know
what you want.

However, Automatic updates also has facility to download the updates for
you, but allows you to choose when to install them.

It can also notify you of updates without automatically downloading
them.
