Installing and unistalling programs

I am having a problem installing and uninstalling programs on an HP with an AMD 2200+, windows XP. I tried to uninstall McAffee virus scan to install Norton, and it will not install, just hangs. Same happens when installing Norton Utilities. I suspect it is a problem with windows installer, but the weird thing is that I could uninstall other programs just fine. I went through the steps on MS website to reset and/or reinstall windows installer. I hate to completely wipe and redo the machine to fix the problem. Can anyone help?? Thanks. BT

If you try to install two AV apps they will conflict with each other.
