Installing additional windows components not working

B

Bob

Hi,
I'm trying to add components to my windows setup through Add/remove windows
components within Cntrl Panels. I have Xp Home with SP2 installed. In this
case I'm trying to add Fax Services.

When I check Fax services and then Next it begins copying files as expected.
I then get a message that sates that file fxssvc.exe cannot be copied.
Ensure the location is correct or insert your SP 2 CD. I checked in the
directory it is trying to copy from and that file is there along with all
the other files it is looking for. I tried redoing SP2 sending clean copies
of all the files to the subject directory but get the same result. The SP2
file only extracts to this one directoy so there is no misdirection going
on.

Does anyone have a suggestion on how to fix this? Is there something else
that needs to be installed first before this will proceed. I can't imagine
this but then it's not working either.

This is a genuine copy of XP.

Thanks

Locate, download and run AutoStreamer. This will help you to create a
new XP install CD (aka slipstreaming) which would contain the SP2
files "merged" into the install process. You need the "original" XP
install files in order to install "missing" modules and just SP2
files are not enough.

Ok I downloaded and installed this. When I insert my CD the Windows CD
drive selects the right drive and size but says operating system unknown,
build unknown with a red X to the left of the Windows CD Drive label.

I select the SP file and this fills in the field. Once again a Red X to the
left (probably because of the above). I leave the default Temp Folder which
has a green check to the left.

I tried the install process from the orig Cd once again. Insert the CD,
windows install screen opens. I select install Optional Windows Components.
This opens the components window, I select Fax Services and click Next. The
message is "Setup cannot copy the file fxssend.exe" and then Ensure the disk
labeled "Windows XP Home Edition CD-ROM" is in the drive below. This CD is
in the drive and is the CD that gave me the screen to install the components
in the first place.

I tried installing another component and not the fax services and the same
thing happened.

Ideas?

To be able to "slipstream" SP2 into XP install, you must not be using
a "dreaded" recovery CD. Do you have a "true" XP install CD???

And there lies the problem!

I have the CD that Dell gave me when I purchased my laptop. What a pain
this has become! Now if I were able to get a complete XP Pro CD would that
work keeping in mind that I have the Home edition installed on this? I can
create this at work with a pro CD and the SP2 file.

Thanks for hanging in there and helping me with this.

If you go with Windows XP PRO, you must also change the XP CD Key that
was delivered with the laptop. The CD Keys are not inter-changable
between XP versions (Home, Pro or Company Volume Licence.) Also,
depending on the warranty "wording", your laptop's warranty can be
voided (no more warranty) if you do not use the "original" version of
XP that was delivered with the laptop.

One possible "solution" is to locate someone (friend) who has an OEM
version of XP Home and use this CD to slipstream. Even better if the
OEM version already has SP2 merged in. Then, you should be able to
install the "missing" modules correctly.

BTW: With most Recovery CD style XP installs, the computer
manufacturer (DELL) has deemed that the extra modules are not needed
and may have tweaked the XP install process so as to not install them.

Ok I did this as you said and created a merged Home/SP2 CD. I popped the CD
in and used the install windows components through Cntrl Panels. I checked
the box for Fax and then let it rip. It went to the CD ( a good sign) and
then went through the install process giving various messages such
"installing files and completing configuration of fax services, something
about Com+ and so on. Then I get the window saying Completing the Windows
Components Wizard with the Finish button highlighted. I'm happy at this
point!

Then I go to Printers & Faxes, nothing there. Then I go to
Programs/Accessories/Communication and see a Fax option but then it says
empty. Back to Printers & Faxes I see Set up Faxing. I do this and it goes
through the Completing Config of Fax Services again. Still no fax option
that I can find. I look back at Add/Reommve Window components in Cntrl
Panels and the Fax box is unchecked so I'm back at the beginning again even
though it seems to be doing what it's supposed to.

Totally annoyed with windows now! I seem to be moving ahead but then not.
I did connect to a phone line thinking that might be needed at this point.
I'm at a loss here. Any other suggestions?

Thanks for all your help!

One important step to install the MS FAX modules: do you have a
standard "dial-up" analog modem? DSL and cable modems are "mis-
labeled" and do not provide fax features.

Yes, I have the standard modem in this laptop. It has worked fine in the
past when I was using Winfax but now Winfax and Outlook 07 don't get along
so I have to revert to the windows fax system.

It's an Actiontec 56k. I think it hates me!

WinFAX has been discontinued by Symantec. They do not seem to be
continuing to develop it nor do they offer "direct" support.

As for installing MS FAX, are you using a "true" Administrator type
account?

B

Bob

Yes I'm logged in as Admin with a full password protected admin account.

It is listed as Administrator and is the only account on here other than a
guest acct. This is my personal laptop and not a company one giving only
limited rights. I can install, alter or delete anything I want and have
over time.

I checked my modem in Device Manager and all seems well with no errors on
it.

If you see Fax in the printers and fax folder, it's installed... but
you say it's not... if it IS installed, you will see "send a fax"
where Setup Fax was before...

Fax is not an application that you can run, it works as a printer...
you "fax" by 'printing to the fax module', but first it has to get
installed...

I'm leanin towards a missing file... just not sure where... If you
can get your hands on another copy, or maybe look on the C:\ drive for
a folder named \i386, during the setup, point to this directory
instead.... just a thought....

When I do the install now it goes through the process automatically, meaning
that it doesn't prompt me for a CD or directory. It goes through the
process but no printer/fax appears and the Fax option is still unchecked in
the Windows Add/Remove screen. Very confusing as to why this won't work.

Since it runs without intervention I can't direct it anywhere. It seems to
think it has everything it needs to install itself.

Thanks for the thoughts

I have the same problem, but am not using a Dell computer. The fax used to
work and quit for some reason. The automatic setup from the control console,
add programs, etc must not overwrite any files that are corrupted and doesn't
seem to present any error messages, either. Microsoft is not supporting its
product without a fee. This is unreasonable at best and arrigant to boot.
There should be a program out there that finds the problem and fixes it from
Microsoft. The technicians must have something that the rest of us users
could use, but they won't give it up or include it in their CDs. Now I am
looking for an OS that will support it's product.

Well I tried the AutoStreamer and it made the iso. However, it did not solve
my problem. The only real option that leaves me, as far as I can tell, is to
go ahead and do a complete reinstall of the system & the programs I had been
using. That is not an option that I want.

I did try the AutoStreamer and the only thing that I was able to do was to
create the iso. When I ran it and attempted the install of the fax
component, it ran, like normal, but in going back to check to see if it did
install, the fax box was unchecked, again.

My comment only referred to your last line. I have no opinion or advice for
your actual issue, except to use a different faxing app. It is typical of
Windows to have only very basic apps that don't tend to work well (except
Notepad and WordPad.) If you want decent apps, you go find them elsewhere.
