Installing Access XP alongside Office Std

H

Helen Glenn

XP SR2. Office 2003 Standard installed (an upgrade from Office XP
Professional).

I need to use Access for a month or two only.

Is it safe to install Access from the XP Professional Suite CD?

thanks

Hi Helen,
Office 2003 Standard installed (an upgrade from Office XP Professional).

??
Office Standard would be a downgrade vs. Office Professional...

Or, you might get hooked like the rest of us and be using it much longer! :)

I would think you should be fine (as long as you are installing a copy that
you are licensed to use).

But she's going from Office 2002 to Office 2003. Sort of a weird upgrade but
I guess it is an upgrade. At least for Word, Excel, etc.

I upgraded that way (from professional to standard) because at the
time I was watching cash flow and didn't think I'd ever use Access
again.

My initial problem I resolved by uninstalling Office Standard 2003
(upgrade version) entirely, installing only Access from Office
Professional XP, and installing Office Std 2003.

Happy (moderately happy) co-existence, no money needlessly spent,
mission accomplished. I should have thought of this first.

Thanks all.

Hi Helen,

Make sure that you apply all of the service packs for your version of
Windows, your two versions of Office software (Access 2002 + Office 2003
Standard), and the JET Database engine. Here is a Microsoft KB article that
provides useful tips:

How to keep a Jet 4.0 database in top working condition
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=303528

Make sure to follow these three links in the above referenced article:

2.) Verify that the latest operating system service pack is installed
3.) Verify that the latest Microsoft Jet service pack is installed
9.) Verify that the latest service pack for your version of Office is
installed

By ensuring that your system is fully patched, you will avoid a lot of
headaches that you might otherwise encounter.

Unfortunately, if you installed an Upgrade version of Office 2003 Standard,
that really means that you forfeited the license you previously had for
Office XP Professional. That's the reason why the Upgrade versions of Office
are cheaper: because they don't include a new license.
