installing a digital camera

I'd like to "register" an Olympus digital camera with XP, mainly so that I
can tell windows to go straight to the olympus camedia software.

However, when I plug the camera in, it's showing as a removable drive, not
as a camera. Device Manager shows it as a drive, and even identifies the
camera model.

If there are any pictures on the memory card, it still shows as a drive, and
the the camera and scanner wizard opens. ( I've used the wizard to download
pictures..the only problem is the file naming method).

I can tell the wizard to do nothing, then open my software, so it's just
irksome rather than a real problem. I've tried "new install" in control
panel|cameras and scanners, but my camera is not listed there.

Having now visited the windows xp knowledge base, I've found that xp does
not support my camera, and I must use my olympus software. Since this is
exactly what I want to do, the question is - can I somehow stop the
cameras and scanners wizard from opening?

This is why the instructions tell you to install the software before you
plug in the camera. I suggest that you try removing the camera from the
Device Manager. Then plug the camera in and see if your camera software
is invoked instead of XP treating your camera as a disk drive.

To see nonpresent devices in Device Manager, open a command prompt:

C:\> set DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES=1
C:\> devmgmt.msc

Then "show hidden" and your nonpresent devices will appear. You can then
delete nonpresent devices like your camera, which is likely listed under
"Disk Drives".
