I just installed xp pro on my laptop from me. The file
system stayed fat32 did not convert to ntfs. Will I be
sorry in the future for not doing a clean format to this
hardisk? What does ntfs buy me over fat32?

It doesn't do it unless you tell it to. But you can still convert
if you want to.

Probably not. I would have done what you did. You can always do a
clean reinstallation if problems develop in the future.

Unless there is a good reason to convert to NTFS, I suggest leaving
the file system as FAT-32. Recovery is much easier with a FAT-32
file system than it is when using NTFS. There are tools to recover
from NTFS but by and large are still not as easy to use as working
with FAT-32.

NTFS does offer greater security, file compression, and encryption.
All great if you need them. Go to the links provided by Mr. Blake and
read before you decide.

The upgrade does not do a conversion (so leaving open a door to
uninstall back to ME). You can convert later - but first read
considerations at www.aumha.org/win5/a/ntfs.htm and guidance on
conversion at www.aumha.org/win5/a/ntfscvt.htm
