Installed XP, fonts look terrible

I recently bit the bullet and upgraded my Windows 2000 systems to XP.

I have a huge problem now, the fonts look absolutely terrible and are
pixelated and blurry. (This is on a laptop screen that looked absolutely
crystal clear in Windows 2000).

What in the hell happened in between versions to look so horrible. I
have tried every setting possbile (Standard smoothing, clear type etc..)
with no luck.

If I can't fix this, I'll have to go back to Win2000. I cannot believe
how a supposed updated product would be made to look so horrible by
default. I am a writer and I have to be able to look at the screen!!

Thanks for any help..

Install the correct monitor .inf file from the monitor manufacturer. Install
the most current video drivers from the manufacturer of the video board. I
have found that the WHQL drivers from NVIDIA will work on most all NVIDIA
based boards, no matter who markets the boards.

Usually when someone complains about fonts on an LCD,
it's because he's running it at the "wrong" resolution.
Unlike CRTs, LCDs have only one native resolution that
looks good.

You are not running the display at the correct resolution for your TFT
monitor.
try various resolutions to find the correct one that looks clear, or read
your monitor
manual!

Forgot to mention this is on a laptop, and all I did was upgrade it from
W2K to XP and now it looks horrible. The resolution is the same as I
have always used.

I've done some more research and found a number of people complaining
about this, and how the supposed ClearType option just makes it worse.

Oh well..

You mentioned laptop before. That's how I knew it was an
LCD. What resolution are you running at and what model
is the laptop?

That sounds as if you are not using the native resolution of the laptop.
*mostly* they are 1024 x 768 but you must have it matching - whatever
the OS
