Installed updates in Windows now internet explorer not working

Hi
I was prompted by windows to install updates which I did. I have windows xp
SP2. When installation was finished I was prompted to upgrade to internet
explorer 7 which I did. But when I restarted my computer, sites will just
open on the homepage. IE will not let me open any other windows from the
address bar. I can enter into a site, by typing the site name in the Google
homepage toolbar and enter from there but when I have to open another window
the software stalls and keeps making a noise like I am hitting a brick wall,
a small window appers in the corner saying microsoft explorer and eventually
I have to end program as I cannot do anything else, computer justt freezes. I
have looked at the info on IE and it says I have internet 6 not internet 7 so
I can't uninstall 7. I have tried a system restore back to 3 different dates
but to no avail. As I can't open any sites I cannot download any repair
installations. Is there anything I can do in safe mode. Sorry to be so
longwinded but I can't believe I have this problem as I was only doing as I
was prompted. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Post this question in the Internet Explorer news group. I'm not very
up to date on IE7, as there is no way in the deepest darkest corners
of hell that I would install it on my machine after hearing all of the
horrifying stories of its unending demonic ways. Sorry to be so dark,
but that's about what everybody in the world is saying about IE7.
First search the Internet Explorer news group for an answer, as it has
probably been a topic that many have conversed on, and if you can't
find your answer, then post.

Robert thanks for the reply, I spent all day yesterday thralling through the
boards to find something on this but to no avail. i have also posted on the
IE board. I was also onto my IT people who did the system restore. Really at
loss to know what to do, I have the original Windows XP operation systems
disk so may have to reinstall??

Well, it will fix your problems. I would hate to see you go through
that kind of trouble though. Has no one in the IE7 group replied to
your post?
