installed small office 2003, SLIDE show does not work in ppt! Need

New HP laptop, installed Office 03,(small business ed) as an update to the
preloaded "works".

When opening a previously created ppt. presentation, the "show slide show"
option does not function. ( an odd "powerpoint slide show" tile shows at
the bottom of the screen, but you cannot open or close it) Never had this
with the old computer, running same ppt. program as before now?

What the heck am I missing
