How to stop opening .ppt files in slide show?

L

LindaM

All of a sudden my .ppt files are opening in slide show view, and sometimes
with incomplete content showing. I can not find where to change the setting
and open in normal view so I can edit.

- When I am in slide show my right click menu does not offer a save open,
just things like go to page and end slide show.

I did have trouble a few days ago with a PowerPoint file that came in as
..pttx. Could this be connected?

Hi Lucy,

Hope you don't me asking in this one as have posted similar issue in a
thread named Powerpoint stopped opening in full auto slide show, well my
problem is PPS and PPT files, the weird this is on my Toshiba laptop it opens
it correctly but my Compaq desktop opens them in the edit window and Glen
first gave me a link to the repair broken file association webpage and I
tried it but in Vista the powerpoint exe says powerpoint.exe.manifest and
nothing about regserver, so would I need to change the .manifest in the run
box to /regserver? Thanks for any help you can give as sent same powerpoint
to my friend who has same office suite as me(the full 2007 home and student)
and she gets the error message saying no program associated with this file.
So this is why I wondered if would be OK to ask you as this lady seems to be
having the same issue as myself and now my friend can't even open it and
don't want to send her the link to that webpage knowing it didn't fix my
desktop. Hope this isn't classed as hijacking another persons question as
just so weird that all of must get same windows updates so why can my laptop
open them correctly yet my desktop won't am really confused.

Hi Linda,

I'm having the same problem but I found it recently on a PPS file and in the
end I've given up and changed mine to open in Microsoft PowerPoint Viewer and
they now open up in full screen mode so not sure if this would help you as
well. I think Lucy could be right as my desktop always used to open all
powerpoint emails in full screen mode now all of a sudden it won't. A very
helpful gentleman named Glen was helping me and as none of the solutions
worked he suggested I call Microsoft product support and ask them to take me
through step by step to fix the issue but have decided to just change it to
viewer as at least then it opens. But as you need to edit yours maybe you
will need to call support if the link Lucy gave you didn't work either.

Hi

I have read your other thread and got a little confused, so can we start
again please? This is where I think we are:
1. You have PowerPoint 2007
2. You are running it on Vista
3. On the problem machine .pps opens in edit mode when double clicked, not
slide show mode as would be expected
4. This happens with all .pps files
5. These .pps files are on your harddrive, not e-mail attachments
6. .ppsx files open in slide show mode as expected

If you could confirm I'm on the right track we'll take it from here. Please
could you also let me know if you can see file extensions in windows
explorer (i.e. you can see filename.pps not just filename) and what the
screen tip says if you hover over the file (e.g. 'PowerPoint 97-2003 Slide
Show' or 'PowerPoint Presentation'). Please write back in short sentences or
lists as I will find that easier to follow than one long paragraph :)

Hi Lucy,

1:Yes I have full office 2007
2:Yes am on Vista Home Premium 32 bit
3: Yes they open in edit mode, then have to find the slide show symbol to
watch it in full screen mode.
4: Yes all .pps and .ppt files
5: No are email attachments, that have saved to hard drive, but always used
to open straight into full screen mode only recently has it stopped opening
on auto full screen mode but same program on toshiba laptop with(I assume)
all the same windows updates opens email .pps or .ppt files in auto full
screen mode and in default programs both say the same Micorsoft Office
PowerPoint.
6: Yes .ppsx open in full screen mode and only way to get .pps and .ppt to
open automatically in full screen is to convert them from email into .ppsx
files.

Sorry about other replies was bit tired when did then but wanted to find out
if was doing something wrong as never had problems before.

Thanks,
Debbie

Hi Lucy,

Forgot to say when I hover over the file it just says .pps no file name and
if I right click on it and choose properties it says at the top it says type
of file PPS File (pps)

Thanks
Debbie
