When I do a check on my pc to see if it is optimized. It tells me i have 132
programs installed. In fact I only have about 30 and the rest are windows
updates. Does that decrease the performance of my system? Do I leave all
updates in my installed programs? I use all the programs that i have
installed myself. I have a Dell 3000 with windows xp pro. 512mb

What application are you using to see this information? If it's Task
Manager and you see 132 Processes running, that would be a bit much. I have
about 55, at last count a minute ago. And I have a bunch of stuff installed
on my system. If I look in Windows Explorer>Program Files I see about 2000
folders containing about 24000 files. Yours would be about the same, more
or less, I would guess.

It's the applications that run at system start up that are the resource hogs
on a system. Decide what you can live without and get rid of them. Do some
researching first to make sure you don't delete something essential to
Windows. Don't muck with the Windows Updates. They don't really take up
much hard drive space and they don't do anything after they are installed.
They're just like the installation files you would have after downloading
and installing some kind of utility or screensaver or the like. The program
is installed in the appropriate directory while the installer file (like
SOMEPROGRAM.exe as an example) just sits in the folder you saved it to and
behaves itself.

I have tune-up utililities and it has a system analyzer to see if you can
better improve the performance of your pc. It tells me I have 132 programs
installed and I should remove what I don't use. My pc works fine I have only
5 on the start up.Windows updates are in my installed programs where you can
add or remove are the downloaded to the right area? I have no intention of
removing them.Thank you.
