Installed Hard drive...CDROM no longer working

Hi. I installed a new hard drive on my Win98 computer that already has
a CDROM drive and a CDRW drive. Both drives were working before I
installed the new hard drive. After the installation the CDRW stopped
working. It won't even eject and the light stays green. The CDROM is
still working.

The hard drive and CDROM are connected on the primary IDE channel as
master and slave, respectively. I didn't touch the CDRW, which is on
the secondary IDE as master (the jumper was initially set to SELECT
but I changed it to MASTER and it made no difference). I installed
WinXP on the system but it made no difference. Can anyone give me
pointers as to what to try next? Thanks in advance.

The "master" jumper setting can not be used with a single device an IDE
channel. If it is by itself, what is it the master of?

Use cable select OR set the jumper as a single drive.

That depends on the manufacturer. On Maxtor drives there is a master jumper
and it must be set for it to be master regardless of whether it is on the
bus by itself or with another device.

Try replacing the IDE cable with a newer ATA133 cable
and keep the HDD master using the end of the ATA133 cable
for the HDD and jumping the CD "slave" and using the middle connection
of the cable for it
