installed a windows update, now my system wont come out of hiberna

I am using windows XP and MS Office 2000. Yesterday, I received a file that
I need to work on, but it is in Word2007. When I tried to open it, I got a
message from MS that I must download a compatilbility converter file. So I
followed the link and was told that first I need to download updates. I was
surprised because I use automatic update and it just ran the day before, but
I downloaded and installed them.

The two updates were: 1) Microsoft.net Framework 2.0 SP1 (KB110806) and
Windows Genuine Authority Validation tool (KB 892130). The installation
wasnt really smooth (dialog box never closed), but a check on update history
indicated that the installation was successful. I also downloaded but have
not installed the office compatibility converter.

OK, so now I think everything is fine, but I am very wrong. Ever since I
installed those two updates, my system will not wake up from hibernation or
power down or whatever it is called. Moving the mouse doesnt work, tapping
keys doesnt work. I cant even shut down by hitting the power button - I
have to hold power button for a while or I can restart with the restart
button. This is no good.

I used add/remove programs to uninstall the framework thing. Still have the
non-wake up problem. I unplugged the computer for a while, then plugged it
back in and the problem persists.

Now, to make matters worse, the technician who worked on my computer last,
turned off system restore. Since I had no idea about this feature, I only
found out about it when someone told me that all I had to do is use system
restore. But I have no restore point before the problem.

What can I do about this? I have tried all I know, admittedly thats not
much. But I am about ready to switch to a MAC.

Thanks for any assistance that may be provided. I am at my wit's end here.

Since I posted the first time, I found out that I misused the term
"hibernation". I have hibernation disabled, and am talking about standby
mode. I have my power scheme set to turn off monitor after 15 minutes, turn
off hard drive never, and standby after 30 minutes. The enable hibernation
box is NOT checked.

Prior to downloading those two recommended updates, I could leave my
computer for extended periods and bring it out of standby mode just by moving
the mouse or tapping a key. Now, if I catch it a few minutes after standby
starts, it will respond, but anything longer than a half hour or so and I
cannot get a response. I have deleted the power scheme and entered it again,
but that did not fix the problem

Thanks for your reply. I wish that I had used the right terminology.
