Hello, i need to change my dc (its a child domain dc) it has
its dc replica in the same subnet. The thing is the server i
need to replace is named sv1, we got a new on and installed
the same windows, i want to make it a dc and giv it the same
name so i dont have to change things in my clients.
How can i do this? The new server is not promoted. Can i do
this backing up the system state of the sv1, name the new
server sv1 and restore it?
Thanks in advanced

Yes, you can do this by restoring but I wouldn't recommend it. I would
promote a temporary DC, called temp, transfer all roles to that, then demote
the original DC and remove from the domain. Then rename the new box and
promote to a DC and transfer all the roles back. Once done, remove the temp
DC.

But Paul i?ve already have a second server in that child
domain. The top domain has 2 servers m1 and m2 then the child
domain has s1 and s2 all replicating correctly. I can?t
rename the box because i have w2k not w2k3

he is telling you to promote in a temp dc to hold ad, demote the original
named server, introduce a new server with the old name promote it and then
demote the temp.
