Installed 2 new hard drives now file copy is very slow

G

Guest

I recently upgraded the hard drives in my PC (Win XP Pro SP2). I duplicated
my old 110Gb HD to a new WD 250 Gb HD using Acronis Migrate Easy 7 and then
switched the drives. I then added a second WD 250 Gb HD (identical specs and
both brand new). Both drives are EIDE 8MB/ATA100.

XP launches fine but I have discovered that file operations (file copy,
move, etc...) take a very long time. Sometimes the PC also takes a long time
to respond to commands (mouse clicks, etc...) and some apps do not launch
anymore (Internet Explorer, Firefox) while others run fine.

Both HDs are set to Cable Select. Each on a separate cable (2nd hard drive
uses ribbon cable that fisrt connects to internal DVD drive.

I performed a full defrag on the main drive and everything looks fine except
for the above issues. How can I restore performance and missing apps?

Try running HD Tune(freeware).

Download and run it and see what it turns up.
http://www.hdtune.com/

Select the Info tabs and place the cursor on the drive under Drive
letter and then double click the two page icon ( copy to Clipboard )
and copy into a further message.

Select the Health tab and then double click the two page icon ( copy
to Clipboard ) and copy into a further message. Also do a full surface
scan with HD Tune.

Temperature is high for both drives (57F for C and 54F for E). These are
installed in a small form factor ShuttlePC enclosure...

Any suggestions?

Have you tried using an Air Duster to remove dust bunnies inside the
computer casing?

Operating temperature in link:
http://www.wdc.com/en/products/Products.asp?DriveID=42

HD Tune does have a Bench Marking feature,. Not that I would profess to
fully understand how it works.

Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to select Task Manager and click the Performance
Tab. Under Commit Charge what is the Total, the Limit and the Peak?

Please post copies of all Error and Warning Reports appearing in
the System and Application logs in Event Viewer for the last boot. No
Information Reports or Duplicates please. Indicate which also appear in
a previous boot.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308427/en-us

Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you
should double click for further information. You can copy using copy
and paste. Often the link will, however, say there is no further
information.
http://go.microsoft.com/fw.link/events.asp
(Please note the hyperlink above is for illustration purposes only)

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

You seem to have Windows Server 2003 installed, which really takes most
of your problems off topic for this newsgroup. I have no experience with
Windows Server 2003 so my ability to advise is limited. You might be
better to pursue individual questions in this newsgroup:

Hi Gerry,

I am running Windows XP Pro SP2 on this PC. It has 1Gb of RAM. It has PC
Tools Spyware Doctor installed (used to have Symantec Anti Virus a long time
ago but it was removed and replaced with PC Tools). This PC has never had
2003 installed on it.

I guess I could add an extra Gb of RAM if it will help...

Any other thoughts?

Moxie

Symantec products are difficult to remove even their own tools. You
would seem to have left a bit behind.

Use Autoruns to find any unwanted start ups!
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/ProcessesAndThreads/Autoruns.mspx

Note the ability to Search Online by right clicking on any item to get
information about it.

I am not too familiar with PC Tools and Spyware Doctor but Registry
Mechanic from the same stable does not enjoy a particularly good
reputation in many quarters.

You can do a better check on pagefile usage using pagefilemon. Having
RAM memory of 1 gb would be enough for most users.

Use page file monitor to observe what is the peak usage. Start it to run
immediately after start-up and look at the log. Pagefilemon takes
snapshots. You need to run it at the beginning of the session at then
run it again at intervals throughout the sessions. The log is Pagefile
log.txt. If you right click on the file in Windows Explorer and select
Send to, Desktop (Create Shortcut). The same applies to
XP_PageFileMon.exe.

A small utility to monitor pagefile usage:
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/utils/xp_pagefilemon.htm

Note that programs using undo features, particularly those associated
with graphics and photo editing, require large amounts of memory so if
you use this type of programme check these first observing how the page
usage increases when they start and whether the usage decreases when you
close the programme.

Is your computer dual booting Windows XP Pro SP2 with Windows Vista? You
seem to have features which I would not expect with Windows XP Pro SP2.

Hi Gerry,

Thanks for the quick reply. I'm running plain vanilla XP Pro. No Vista, no
dual boot. I agree there's probably remnants of Symantec apps buried in
there. I do run graphics intensive programs from time to time but my main
complaint is when attempting to do simple tasks like open a Windows Explorer
window and have to wait forever before the I can regain use of the PC. This
means no other apps are available to me while this is going on. Im many
cases, I only have Outlook and Firefox running in the background so there is
nothing there that should suck the life out the PC.

I've also noticed the PC will become totally unresponsive and I will need to
crash Windows Explorer because it's just stuck in la-la-land...

Its almost like if there were phantom processes running in the background.

Oh and the reason I switched from Symantec to PC Tools is Symantec was
taking way too many system resources. PC Tools seems much better and I
haven't heard of any complaints about their products.

I'll do more digging and hopefully track down what's going on there.

Thanks again for all your suggestions...

Cheers,

Moxie

Hi Gerry, quick follow up to my previous reply. I found only one reference
to a Symantec product that was uninstalled a while back. Other than that,
everything looks fine.

I'll keep digging...

In Autoruns you can uncheck to stop it starting and right click on the
item gives you an option to delete.
