Installation/Upgrade to XP from ME

I had been under the impression that I could reformat my hard drive during an upgrade installation of XP. Needless to say, I discovered that I couldn't. The upgrade is working fine, but I still have my old Programs Folder left over, and some of those programs are obviously not "registered" with XP and don't appear in the Programs option on the Start Menu.

1. Do you recommend reformatting the hard drive, and if I do so using a bootable XP floppy, will I be able to reinstall the operating system since it will no longer technically be an upgrade?

2. Alternatively, is there any way to "register" my old software or is it safe just to delete the directory?

Insert Xp cd-rom and choose "New Install" XP will do the reformatting

Start the installation by booting from the CD.
Delete the partitions and provide proof of an upgrade
product when prompted.
(Remember to use NTFS when asked for a File System)
NOTE: No, you do NOT need to have the old installation
still on the system, merely providing the Windows ME
install disc when asked during install is proof enough to
qualify for the upgrade.

To do it you need to start the Upgrade, then change Upgrade to 'New
Install'. When it asks you to confirm where, hit ESC; select and
delete the current partition and make a new RAW one to be formatted at
the next stage/ By that time the check you are eligible to upgrade has
been made

The important point is the delete. Without that it will just go ahead
and make a new install over the top of the old one
