Hello everyone

I recently upgraded to Genuine XP Pro w/SP2 I have an older Dell
Latitude with 256RAM 12G Hard drive.

I have tried to reinstall Civilization 3 on my computer but the CD
runs but does not install and will not launch and I get the message:

Setup failed to launch installation engine: Access is denied

Please Help!

1/ You are running XP on 256mb RAM and ONLY 12GB hdd ?? Check out your
"free" hdd space - if it's less than 5GB, any application is going to
struggle, and 256MB RAM is the bare minimum for XP alone ...
2/ Whilst I'm sure that Rich Barry's advice is correct, personaly I find it
a constant problem to see "knowledgebase" answers which define them as
applicable to older OS's, and NOT XP ... the average XP inquiror would
discount the advice, as not applicable to XP. As in this case .... XP not
mentioned in this Knowledgebase answer. Are we to assume that any info
relevant to NT or 2000 is equally relevant to XP ?

Silvabod has valid concerns. While it's true that 256MB Ram is less than
satisfactory for WinXP, the fact that you mentioned reinstalling
Civilization 3 meant to me that there was a time when it was installed and
worked fine. Let us know
if that KB Article was helpful to you and got you up and running.

OP is ambiguous. I understood it as "Civilisation 3" was installed on pc
prior to XP upgrade" - it's equally possible to interpret it as being
installed after.
However, given the pc's meager resources, and the specific wording of posted
problem, I believe my original interpretation is correct. Answer is, the
pc just doesn't have enough space or memory to load it - there's barely
enough hdd space for the system swap-file, let alone memory (virtual or RAM)
for processing (and XP is protecting itself in preventing the game
installation).

Assuming the processor is relatively current, prioritise additional RAM (ADD
512Mb min, not just a bare 256Mb) and invest in a new hdd, is one short-term
solution - BOTH items necessary.
Graphics should be OK since it ran before, (Googled, game spec says it runs
on W98 up) BUT - if this is an "old" pc, as I suspect (a PIII perhaps?) and
gaming is a user priority, consider a more powerful pc as better option,
more cost-effective, rather than incur upgrade cost on an already
obsolescent/dated pc. You don't HAVE to go "Vista" ... there's still a few
XP bargains about!
