I am upgrading from 98SE to XP Professional, and when it
goes into the setup it crashes after 34 mins precisely
everytime, I have tried restarting machine many times but
it still gives me the same crashing problem, and i can't
get into the desktop, even through Safe Mode, it just
restarts setup evrytime. I know theres a fix for this from
Microsoft Knowledgebase, but i cant implement this hotfix
unless i can fully access my computer and the desktop.
I was thinking about installing 98SE again from MS DOS
command prompt, but i am worried about my existing data,
stupidly i have no backup systems.

Any suggestions, will be gratefully received!!!

Regards,

Alex.

Physically disconnect all peripheral hardware devices from your PC,
except your monitor, mouse and keyboard. Then go out and get two
PS/2 adapters and use them to connect your keyboard and mouse
to the PS/2 ports in lieu of using the USB connections, then proceed
with a "Repair Install".

Thanks for your quick response, but i don't have mouse or
keyboard on USB, they are already pn PS/2. But i do have a
USB zip drive and USB printer currently connected, does
this make any difference?

Thanks.

I am having a similar problem...after 34 minutes I got a
blue screen memory dump, and now upon powering up, it
just keeps repeating the Windoes startup screen, but
never does anything else. Shall I try the same hardware
unplug?

Thanks!

Steve
