Installation problem, keyboard & mouse disabled

Hi, I'm upgrading my WIN2000 Pro pc to XP Pro. I'm running into a problem
while intalling devices. During this part of the upgrade, my keyboard and
mouse become disabled. Then, a prompt pops up that says: "Files Needed. Type
a path where file is located and then click OK." and the upgrade pauses.
Problem is, I can't type a path or click ok because the keyboard and mouse
are disabled. What can I do?

BTW, the prompt is asking for files for the video driver. I thought I'd be
smart and remove my video card so the install would use the card built into
the motherboard. But no, it wants the video drivers for that one too.

I hope somebody can help me. I searched, but couldn't find this problem.
Thanks in advance.

I'd like to add that the mouse and keyboard are usb. I'm now trying it again
with a serial mouse. Unfortunately, I don't have a serial keyboard.

Well, it was a USB problem. I found a serial mouse and was able to click
away. I wonder, has Microsoft documented that possible issue. It was very
frustrating for myself, as I don't do upgrades very often. Someone who does,
would have surely run into this problem and known what to expect. Maddening!

This is not a Microsoft problem. Your computer's BIOS should have "USB
Legacy Devices" enabled so you can use a USB Keyboard and Mouse. Refer to
your motherboard or computer documentation on how to enter the BIOS and
change this value.

Universal serial bus (USB) input devices may not work when unsigned drivers
are being installed during Windows Setup

Article ID : 827052
Last Review : August 18, 2005
Revision : 4.0
SYMPTOMS
A universal serial bus (USB) input device, such as a keyboard or a mouse,
may not work during the Installing Devices portion of GUI-mode Windows Setup.
This behavior can prevent Setup from completing: if Setup tries to install an
unsigned driver, an Unsigned Driver dialog box appears and requires user
input.
CAUSE
This problem occurs because device installation for a USB version 1.1
companion controller of a USB version 2.0 enhanced host controller interface
(EHCI) controller may not have completed by the time the unsigned driver
installation occurs. When this behavior occurs, all USB 1.1 devices do not
work, including mouse devices and keyboards.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this problem, use one of the following methods:• Add a driver
test signature to suppress the unsigned driver dialog box. For more
information about how to obtain and install a driver test signature, click

I have never had this problem before during an upgrade, it was always a BIOS
option that usually causes the USB keyboard and USB mouse not to work. If I
ever run into this problem that you experienced then I will know what to do.

Same here. Although, I probably won't see that again. ; )>

Now I'm having a problem after the upgrade. My pc won't reboot. I'll post to
a new message with a different title, though.
