I am converting a P3 from Win98 to XP Pro for basic word and
spreadsheets and before I upgrade to a larger hd, would like to
know if it is possible to install XP pro without all the peripheral
programs that i'll never use including IE, making movies etc.

I am using a WD 4.3 gig which has worked pefectly for years
and with XP, it leaves me with approx 1 gig free. I would like
an extra half gig and would be set for years to come.

TIA for any help.

IE is I believe, or at least some of its files, a required part of the o/s
You can select either during the install some win components to install, or
remove the components after the install.
The fact that your hd has functioned ok for 'years' doesnt mean it will go
on, it could pack up tomorrow
And never mind the hd size what memory do you have, winxp functions best
with 512mb, and does your hw have winxp drivers available?

If all your doing is basic word and spreadsheets why bother spending $300
bucks to upgrade to XP Pro?????????
Also if your Machine is older chances are you will need to upgrade other
parts as well..........RAM?? Video??
I am sure 98 will do just nicely for your purposes.

If you already have the XP disk, insert it and run the hardware compatibilty
wizard.

Well, Microsoft support for Win98SE ends next month. So, W2K might be
a compromise... kind of XP Lite;-)

At least once a month - on the Microsoft patch day when my rigs
automatically download the Windows and Office hotfixes...
