What do *you* mean by "when the drive was fitted", please expand on your
needs.

(Formatted? Windows XP installed? Put in the machine? Manufactured?
etc... What is it you are looking for? Why would be useful as well...)

Very true - but I am still not positive that is what the original poster was
looking for.

If it is manufacturered date - the Seagate utilities could tell them the
exact date - or easier yet - opening the machine (power disconnected) and
looking on the hard drive itself would grant one access to the manufacture
date.

No. Windows XP does not create a log of the installation date of new hardware,
such as a hard drive.

I mean put in the machine when hdd was new

A hard drive can sit on the shelf for a year before being implemented in a platform or it
can be manufactured, shipped and installed in a plaform in a matter of weeks.

There is no log of information when a drive is implemented into a given platform. You can
only go by a manufacturer's date which is imprinted on the hard disk label or the date of
manufacture by a given platform vendor.

thank you, carey. As to 'why'. I was discussing with the family member who
fit it and we could not agree as to 'when'. Also, asking questions is how
one learns.

Little defensive about being asked "why", eh? Strange.

You never cleared up - that I can tell - exactly what you wanted.

- Hard Disk Drive manufacture date (usually printed on the drive label and
may be in the drive firmware.)
- Hard drive (physical) installation date (when the drive was actually put
into the machine it is currently in) - almost impossible to be sure of as
there is nothing that automatically records that date.
- Windows (or other OS) installation - the OS can usually tell you this in
one way or another - but that only tells you when the OS was actually
installed.

As has been pointed out - the hard disk drive is *old*, that is a given.
The hard disk drive is also small (when compared to the drives available
today.) However - if you are having no trouble wiht the drive - it could
last MANY MANY more years. I still have a 850MB drive that is humming
along - albeit almost useless (and replaced by less than $5 (U.S.) thumb
drives.) The manufacture date is the best guage of age overall - but not of
life.

Uhhh, "fitted" means when it was originally installed into the machine
for the first time, She.

I have visited the 'how to ask questions the smart way' and now realise that
my original post was a bit vague, as shenan stated. I will know in future how
to post a question correctly. Thank you once again, one and all

Can you be 100% sure (without them telling you?)

Hang around these groups long enough and you determine that what one word
means to you - it may mean something totally different to someone else (not
to mention they may have just had a typo/abbreviation mistaken moment.)

No, clothes are fitted. Hardware is NOT "fitted" it is installed.
To be "fitted" one would have to make alterations or modifications specifically to allow
something to work in their intended envirnment.

It was a poor choice of words and leaves the objective open to misinterpretation and
speculation.

| You never had to alter a piece of hardware to make it fit somewhere?

In very rare occasions.

Standard hard disks mount in standard locations. There is *rarely* a need to modify the
chassis to mount a hard disk.
