Installation Key

My computer crashed and I have re-installed Windows XP
Home from the recovery disk. However, I wish to reinstall
my registered version of XP Professional but have lost
the case with the key number. How do I reinstall, as when
I try to contact MS they want the product code which I
can not get without installing?!?

Call Miss Cleo, find your Product Key, find the XP keygen, or go out and
buy another copy of Pro. Those are your only options for the situation
YOU created for yourself.

I don't think she's in business any more. She was a very infamous telephone

Key phrase that Carey missed was, "I have re-installed Windows XP Home from
the *recovery* *disk*." Meaning that this is OEM XP Home. MS won't do
anything to replace an OEM PK.

But the person stated their recovery disk was XP Home version, and he wanted
to reinstall his Pro (registered) version. So maybe it was the correct info.

Don't yourself into a feeding frenzy Carey, you can't be "wrong" all the

Yes, I MUST! Thanks for the confirmation! <vbg>

But even had I made the mistake "straight," I'd fess up to it, though I
probably wouldn't have been as mushy about it. ;-)

Greetings --

The Windows 25-character Product Key (required to perform the
installation) is stored on the CD packaging on a bright orange sticker
that says "Do not lose this number." If it was an OEM (factory
installed) license, it's stored on a label that the PC manufacturer
affixed to the exterior of the PC case, or on the bottom of a laptop.

To recover a lost Product Key:

If your system still runs, you should be able to use Belarc
Advisor from http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html to find the
Product Key. (If you have a factory-installed OEM license, and
haven't since reinstalled the OS, the revealed Product Key is probably
of the drive image used at the factory and not _your_ specific Product
Key; therefore, it probably cannot be -- and definitely should not
be -- used for a re-installation.)

If it was a retail license and you have proof of purchase:

How to Replace Lost, Broken, or Missing Microsoft Software or Hardware
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;en-us;326246

If it was an OEM license, you should contact whomever sold you the
PC; although very few manufacturers/vendors keep records of the
Product Keys they've sold, it's worth a try before you have to buy a
new license.

NO, you cant get the key by installing. There are keyfinders available
to find the key
before you formatted but now its too late.

Next time, make sure you got all you need before you take drastic steps.

Also pay attention - where it says 'Do Not Lose This Number' in large
friendly letters above the label with the key, it *means* it

It's too late for the OP, but the FIRST thing I do with anything (serial
no., product code, whatever) that's on the packaging or elsewhere is to
take a permanent felt-tip marker (Sharpie in the U.S.) and copy the
information onto the CD itself. For multi-CD installation sets, I write
in on the SECOND CD as well, so I don't have to take the first one out
of the drive just to enter the number.

Too bad Microsoft doesn't do this, but that would make things too
easy for us.
