Installation incompatability

I recently purchased a new laptop through Dell that came preloaded with
Vista. It also came with the appropriate Vista CD and product code sticker.

I also purchased another HP desktop computer that also came preloaded with
Vista and it has the appropriate Vista CD and product code sticker.

Recently, while moving, I lost the CDs that came with the laptop and as fate
would have it I needed to reload the OS after running into a problem with an
airport x-ray machine. Anyway, I wanted to reload the OS on the laptop using
the Windows Vista CD that came with my HP desktop. I just thought I could
reload it and use the product code that came with the laptop. That way I
would be able to use the two licenses that I bought and paid for and be legit.

For some reason though it would allow me to use the product code supplied on
the Vista sticker with the Vista CD that came with my desktop. All I want to
do is load Vista back on the two machines that I have the legit licenses for
without having to buy another copy.

Am I screwed or is there a legit work around for this?

You'll have to contact Dell support and request the
appropriate Dell OEM Windows Reinstallation CD.
You cannot legitimately use a HP CD on a Dell computer!

Thanks Carey. I'll take it up with them. I was hoping that a Vista CD was a
Vista CD was a Vista CD but I guess not.

The disks that come pre-loaded from the factories are the OEMs. And they are
tied to that particular computer for its life!
