Another Activation Problem

*My laptop came with Vista Home Premium installed.*

I downloaded a Flash-BIOS update as per advice of my HP Care Centre.
After it was done installing my laptop shut off (as I was told it would do).
When I turned it back on, I was prompted to enter a Product Activation Key.
I entered the Windows Product Key as shown on the sticker on the base of the
laptop.
The message I received was "The Windows Vista Home Premium product key you
typed is invalid for activation"
For the record, YES, I am entering the code in properly.

Choose the phone activation option, follow the prompts and you'll be up
and running within 6-10 minutes.
 
I did, the code I gave didn't work and I was told to wait for an operator.
Hung up, as I'd rather not be up all night on the phone. Guess I'll have to
try it tomorrow.
 
May be some confusion - using phone activation requires a "code" generated
and copied when you select the phone option - it is not the product key
received with the computer.

Also BIO update should have been performed prior to installation of Vista.
 
Yes, I know it's not the product key that you give when you phone. It's the 9
sets of numbers that is generated.
Did it three different times, no luck.

The BIOS update was done as per request of the HP Help Centre on my laptop.
It was shown as a "Critical Update". As I said, Vista was already installed
 
A bit hard to do on a system with Vista preinstalled!
It's possible/probable that the BIOS upgrade changed part of the data used
by the activation process.
You should call HP customer care, since thay can provide you with a valid
key.

If the system has Vista preinstalled, the Vista license key will be
attached to the machine, typically on the top or side of a desktop, or
bottom of a laptop.

The activation code is completely different, and is retrieved by phoning
Microsoft at the number specified in the Vista activation dialog.

Unless the BIOS update happens to come out after Vista is installed, of
course.
