Installation from bootable DVD problem

I'm encountering a problem when trying to install Vista from bootable DVD.
I'm attempting to install to a second hard drive, with my primary HD loaded
with XP Pro.

- DVD drive is set as primary boot device.
- Vista starts loading, with "Windows is loading files" message and progress
bar.
- Progress bar completes, goes to black screen.
- then the "activity meter" (for lack of a better term) starts, with the
"Windows 2006 Microsoft Corporation" message below it.
- then the multicoloured background loads, mouse pointer appears on-screen,
and mouse is active and functional.
- DVD drive and HD are then accessed briefly, and after about 15-20 seconds,
mouse locks up.
- after 30 seconds of inactivity, the system reboots on its own.

I've burned DVDs using Nero at 8x and 2x, both produce the same symptoms.
I've downloaded the file twice, in case the file was corrupted during
download, same symptoms. I've reduced the system to
PC/mouse/keyboard/monitor, same symptoms.

System installs Vista with no problems when running from within Win XP, I
just can't get it to work from bootable DVD - which will pose a problem if I
ever want it as my primary OS.

System:
-AOpen i915Pa-E motherboard
-Intel 3.0 GHz CPU
-1024 MB RAM in dual channel mode
-Sapphire X600XT 256 MB PCI-E video
-Samsung SP1614C SATA 160 GB hard drive (with XP Pro installed)
-Western Digital WD2500JS SATA2 (running in SATA mode) 250 GB hard drive
(where I'm trying to load Vista)
-PS/2 keyboard
-USB optical mouse

Is there a way to do a "logging" install to determine what process/file is
causing the hangup?

do a CRC check on the ISO to find out its integrity. Nero MD5 Verifier is a
recommended
choice. If setup still fails, its likely a bad download.

I use the one from Ahead Nero
http://ww2.nero.com/nero6/eng/Nero_MD5_Verifier.html

Here are the MD5/CRC values for x86 or x64 depending on which every ISO you
downloaded:

x86
- File Size = 3.12 GB (3,355,598,848 bytes)
- CRC Value = 0x67E089E0
- MD5 Value = 0E733AB1A8E8FF9A8684FD3639332773
x64
- File Size = 4.01 GB (4,309,368,832 bytes)
- CRC Value = 0x48697711
- MD5 Value = E43502D0A15EADD551119D5639859E04

Paste the MD5 Checksum for either x64 or x86 depending on which one you want
check in Step 1, Step 2 - Browse to where you stored the ISO on your drive
and open it and it will automatically start the varification process and
generate the has in the third field, if it matches Step 1, then you are
safe.

Thanks for the response, Andre.

Downloaded the Nero MD5 verifier, and the checksum verifies okay. I'm using
the x86 version.

Any other suggestions?

Hi Andre,

Yes, if you look at my original post, you'll note that I mentioned that I
*am* able to install Vista from within XP.

However, I'm not able to install it from a bootable DVD - which will cause a
bunch of problems if I want to try using it as a standalone OS, or if I need
to access Recovery Console. As it stands right now, the only way I can
install Vista is on a system that already contains an OS.

I think I've discovered the problem. At least in my case. If you use a NEC
burner, then you have the same problem as me. Use a different dvd drive to
run setup. I am currently installing, will post back with update.

You might be onto something - I've been using my NEC ND-2510A DVD writer to
boot from. I'll try it now with my other DVD drive, a Pioneer DVD-116 reader.

That's it....for me, anyways.

Booted from the Pioneer drive, and away it went. It would appear that Vista
Beta 2 does NOT like to boot from NEC burners.

Have to mark this one as resolved...thanks for the tip, OCedHrt
