Installation Failed Message

Mark Klapper

My attempt to upgrade from Win 98 to XP Home Edition
resulted in an Installation Failed message that read:
c:\$WIN_NT$.~LS\1386\asms
A component file does not match the verification
information present in the manifest.

What's the fix?

This message is usually indicative of either the XP CD being smudged or
defective or that the user is not using the XP CD, rather they are using a
CD they or someone else burned and they have a bad burn. The solution is to
use the original Microsoft XP CD. If that is what you were using, take it
back to the place where you purchased it and have them replace it as it
appears to be defective.
