Hello.
I am writing to you in hopes that you may be of
assistance. I have a home built computer:

Soyo Motherboard KT600 Dragon Plus V 1.01
Asus 9600SE Video card
Crucial 512 MB DDR Ram - PC2100 - 1card
Windows XP
Western Digital 80GB HDD
AMD 1.3 ghz Duron Processor

My problem is, a few days ago my system started
to run really slow. Applications would take 10 to 15
seconds to open. Once they opened they seemed to run
fine. However the problem became increasingly worse over
the course of a day. To which end I couldn't open
anything once XP had loaded. I decided to reinstall
windows xp and now in the process of installing, it gets
about half way there and then stops, gives me a warning
that it had to stop. It reads as:
A problem has been detected and windows has been shut
down to prevent damage to your computer.
Kernal_Data_Inpage_error
If this is the first time you have seen this error
screen. Restart your computer. If this screen appears
again follow these steps.
1 Check any new hardware that you may have installed to
see that it is installed correctly.
2. If problems persist. disable or remove any newly
installed hardware. Disable the Bios memory options such
as caching or shadowing.

Tech info:

0x19E0D860)
*** win32k.sys - Address BF8FC8F Base at BF800000, Date
stamp 3b7de698

As a result it tells me to check the memory cache and to
remove any new devices that I may have installed. I have
not installed no new devices. A friend told me it may be
a problem with my RAM. I would hope that, that would not
be the case. He told me of a few web sites where I could
download some programs that once put on a boot disk I
could check it. The only problem now is that with my CPU
on the fritz. My floppy drive isn't on the boot list and
when I go into the Bios Setup. I am unable to make any
changes to the boot sequence. I'm at my whits end. Does
this sound like a RAM issue? Is this something that you
have encountered before? Can you suggest anything?
I purchased my RAM from www.newegg.com on 3/10/2003.

Please help if you can.

Sincerely,

Tim Wahe

Generally this error is caused by defective RAM. The following are some recommended steps to resolve the issue:

Resolving a failing RAM problem: Run the hardware diagnostics supplied by the system manufacturer, especially the memory scanner.
For details on these procedures, see the owner's manual for your computer.

Check that all the adapter cards in the computer are properly seated. Use an ink eraser or an electrical contact treatment, available at
electronics supply stores, to ensure adapter card contacts are clean.

Check the System Log in Event Viewer for additional error messages that might help pinpoint the device that is causing the error. Disabling
memory caching of the BIOS might also resolve this error.

Make sure that the latest Windows Service Pack is installed.

If the preceding steps fail to resolve the error, take the system motherboard to a repair facility for diagnostic testing. A crack, a scratched
trace, or a defective component on the motherboard can cause this error.

Additionally you can run the Microsoft memory tester from boot up:
