installation error message

I am trying to install some software on a computer that has Windows 2000. The installation process begins, then stops and displays this error message: _INS5576._MP.exe has generated errors. Windows must close the program

No other programs are running when I try to install the software and there is plenty of room on my hard drive for the new software. Does anyone know what this error message means and how to solve the problem
