Installation dies after first splash screen

Microsoft Beta

I successfully installed MS Antispyware after a clean install of XP home
last week.

Today I installed Trend Micro PC-Cillin 2003 and did the XP updates from the
Microsoft Windows Update page. After that, I noticed that the Microsoft
Antispyware icon was missing from the system tray. I went to the start menu
and tried to run the program, but nothing happened (no splash page, no icon
in the system tray, no error message, no disk activity). So I figured I'd
reinstall. But after uninstalling, I can't get the installer to run - when I
click on the MSAS .exe file, I get a splash screen, and (briefly) a progress
bar, then the whole thing goes away.

I am successfully able to install other programs, so I don't think it's the
Installer error people have reported here.

I have run Adaware SE, it only reports some data miner cookies, which I
deleted.

Anything else I should try?

Addition information:

I went ahead and tried the installer clean-up - it doesn't list MSAS as one
of the entries.

The other thing I did today (besides installing Trend and updating XP) was
to update Office 2002 using the Microsoft Office Update page.

Can you try an update install to see if it changes the
behavior?

control panel, add or remove programs, Microsoft
Antispyware, change, update

It's not listed there - before I tried to re-install, I did a successful
uninstall.

More information: on a Safe-Mode boot, the installer gets much further
along - it gets past the splash screen, successfully unpacks the installer
files, and only dies because the installer app itself won't run in Safe
Mode.

So it seems likely that it's conflicting with some running process - but
which one?

install new or reinstall applications without any process running including MSAS
and AV

IF KB893803 is listed in Add/Remove Programs, try this :
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=898628

" Remove Windows Installer 3.1, and then revert Windows Installer to an
earlier version. To do this, follow these steps:
1. In Control Panel, start Add/Remove Programs.
2. By default, the Change or Remove Programs pane appears. This pane
displays a list of installed programs. Make sure that the Show Updates
check box is selected.
3. In the Currently installed programs and updates list, click to select
Windows Installer 3.1 (KB893803), and then click Remove. Click Next.
4. You receive a message box that states that one or more programs on
the computer may not correctly function if you remove the upgrade. Click
Yes if you want to use this workaround.
5. You receive a message to restart the computer to complete the removal
and the rollback. Click OK to restart the computer.
6. After the computer has restarted, Windows Installer is restored to
the most recent earlier version. "

Info

I'm in a similar situation - new install of XP Pro
service pack 2 with all updates - install fails silently
after a few seconds without any log files to workout why -
must be a conflict but unable to work out what.
PS there is no windows installer to un-install so that's
no good :(
