Installation BSOD STOP 5C -

After Windows starts expanding the files in the installation it reboots
STOP: 0x0000005C (0x0000010B,0x00000003,0x00000000,0x00000000)

PC is ECS RC410L/800-MGF MB, D 945 Intel CPU, 2G Patriot PC4200, 400G SATA
Seagate .

The memory test provided runs clean, XP is running OK on 2 other partitions
on this machine.

Any ideas?

p.s. It is annoying that BCDEDIT is required to switch the order of the boot
back, it should have removed the SETUP default boot on the SETUP failure.

Nigel,

I have only seen this stop error (rather similar to this one) that was
idicitative of bad hardware, but typically with Vista the onboard controller
for the power savings is set to EAC which seems to play holy heck with Vista
installs. From your system BIOS change your power savings to either ASPI or
ASAPI.

Worked on my HP workstation.

Thanks Bill for the suggestion. I tried all the combinations of power
settings I could find but no luck. I would think someone at microsoft would
know the meanings of the hex values after the 5C .

I think my first reply here got lost, I tried all combinations of power
setting but no luck. I am hoping someone knows what the subcodes mean on the
5C .

I have done more research and found other people who cannot get this ECS
motherboard to run Vista. it runs XP Ok, I will wait and see if any BIOS
updates for this motherboard come out with respect to Vista.

Nigel,

I have an ECS RC410L/800M, and received the same message while trying
to install Vista. I have swapped out memory, hard drives, flashed the
BIOS, and even swapped motherboards (it was the same model, though).
All of these items were new. Apparently, the BIOS upgrade addressed a
few early issues, except Vista compatibility. I tried every possible
BIOS setting change, with no luck.

Unless ECS comes up with another BIOS flash, I guess the answer will be
to switch to another motherboard, or go with XP.

Go with XP Pro.... VISTA doesn't let you change out much of anything
without barking up some sort of trash.
