I need to reinstall XP Home on a Gateway computer that is infected with
spyware and viruses. How can I be sure that it replaces everything and
leaves no trace of the old files. The Gateway CD is a recovery one and not
the full version.

Thanks

You need to read the manual that came with your Gateway. Most OEM's give
you the option of just installing new Windows files, leaving your
programs and data in place, or a factory restore which basically puts
the computer back to where it was when you bought it. You want to do
the factory restore in your case. You probably won't want to keep the
antivirus that was bundled with the Gateway because it is older. Have a
current version av on hand for installation and also install a firewall
*before* you go on line with the machine.

Most recovery cd will format the drive and then reinstall. When using the
recovery cd make sure to pick the format option if available.
Then before going online get your firewall, and anti-virus up and running.
Then get on the net and get sp2. Then download and install adaware and
spybot and run those at least once a week.

Simply boot from the WinXP installation CD. You'll be offered the
opportunity to delete, create, and format partitions as part of the
installation process. (You may need to re-arrange the order of boot
devices in the PC's BIOS to boot from the CD.)
