Install XP to External HD

Hi all

Can anyone tell me how to install XP Pro to an external Hard Drive. I have
read a few posts on various sites which say it cant be done. However, I met a
person on a training course who had an external HD with XP on it and used he
could use it to boot xp from it.

Any help would be appreciated

Cheers

Windows XP can only be installed on an internal drive.
External drives are designed for file storage only.

You watched him do this?
And you are sure it is not "BartPE" or "WindowsPE"?

The bios has to support it.

Hi Michael,

Yep my bios DOES support it... The "weird" thing about it is, when I run
setup, it gets me to the "CHoose Partition to install to" section, it shows
me the External HD, it even allows me to create a partition, BUT when I chose
to install it comes up with a long winded message about not being able to and
adding mass storage device driver or something similar.

Shenan,

Yep I did see it, I am not aware of it running BartPE or WindowsPE, unless
it ran that during the boot up sequence. But it did eventually end up
installing windows XP. That said, I do remember that he did show us at one
point a menu that came up similar to the "Ultimate Boot Disk" CD, But whether
that was part of the boot up OR naother choice he choose I am not sure.

Would him having BartPE or WindowsPE explain how he did all of this. Please
excuse my ignorance.

Cheers

Graham
