I purchased a new computer with no operating system as I have a winxp pro
disk

Well... Although I have used this disk to do reinstalls, clean installs... I
cannot get it to work on this new computer...

I have put the cd in a laptop and it wants to install, but it says there is
a newer version on the laptop of winxp than my cd..

Now... What do I do to get this installed on my new amd 64 computer

I had tried a few things of course... Like I had a win2000 cd and I
installed it.. Thinking I could get it up and then install over it.. I got
the win 2000 installed... But couldnot get the winxp to be installed.

I have changed bios to start from win98 boot floppy and also from cdrom
still nothing from my winxp cd

Now.. After doing that.. As it boots up it runs through some bios stuff, I
gutess and says verifying DMI Pool Data.. Then
Boot from CD/DVD
Press any key to boot from cd.... If I don't press right away..i get the
following message.
NTLDR missing press ctrl. Del alt to restart

But the real thing I want to install winxp pro..

Thanks..

Now when I boot up

You may have a pre-existing or partial installation of WinXP.
To completely wipe your disk of anything that's there, do this:
- Boot the machine with a Win98 boot disk from www.bootdisk.com.
- Run delpart.exe from http://www.russelltexas.com/delpart.htm to
delete all existing partitions.
- Boot the machine with your WinXP CD and install WinXP.

Your "new" computer may have been in someone else's possession and already
have an operating system on the drive. If Windows XP SP1 or SP2 is already
on the drive you will get the message you received if you try to install the
original version of Windows XP (without any SP).

Or, your new computer may have a drive that has already been used, and
returned as defective for some reason. It may have somehow found it's way
into your computer. Example: Many hard drives are returned to Best Buy and
are recycled and sold as open boxes - if the return isn't marked as
"defective". Sometimes it happens even if the drive is labeled as defective.
people just assume that the original purchaser didn't know what they were
doing and couldn't get it to work.

I don't have delpart.exe on boot disk
I got computer to see xp cd
And it is trying to setup.
I have said. Go to I386/winnt.exe
But it now says.. Requires hd .... Unable to locate such a drive... Setup
cannot continue.

So it seems like I can't get it to see the hd.. Which is 200 gig..

thanks

The computer is brand new.. ... Or so I believe as a local company built it
for me....

I know that you don't have delpart.exe on the boot disk -
this is precisely why I gave you the link for it. Get the file
and put it on your disk!

Before you can start loading Windows, you must convince
yourself that the BIOS can see your hard disk. If the BIOS
cannot see it then there is no point in continuing. Take the
machine to a computer shop and ask them to check it out.

After reading the thread so far it sounds like your new hard drive may be a
SATA drive. Windows may need a driver for the SATA controller before you can
install it on the hard drive. You should have received a disk for the
motherboard. There should be some drivers on that disk. You will have to
create a floppy disk with those drivers on it. At the very start of the
Windows install you will see a message to Press F6 to load drivers at the
bottom of the screen. Press F6, insert the floppy you created, and follow
the instructions on the screen to install the driver.

Without the SATA drivers, the installer will not even see the partition to
claim that there is a newer version already installed.

I agree if that was the case. The OP seems very confused about what is
happening and the timeline is in doubt. I should have replied to this post:

Take it back....This could be _anything_. Incorrect jumpers, loose
cable,
improper BIOS settings etc etc.

I have solved my problems. I believe my winxp pro disk was scratched or
something.. So I was able to make the boot disks.. For winxp pro.. And got
it all installed that way.

I think I am a very newbie at this..and was obviously very confused..
Thank you all for helping me..
It did take me about 3 installs to get it right with partitioning etc..and
putting the software where I wanted it or thought I wanted it.

Mil gracias. To everyone
