Install XP over 2000?

I have two PCs. And older desktop with 2000 (and two hard drives) and a
newer laptop with XP home.

My question is twofold.

1) Should I "upgrade" the 2000 machine to XP to be consistent among the
machines? Or leave the 2000 machine alone as long as it's working for me?

2) If I install XP on the 2000 machine, will I lose all applications
currently installed on that 2000 machine? What about data files (I think the
only data files I have on the O/S drive are the Outlook Express files that I
wuold want to keep)?

Thanks

* No, not for this reason alone.

* An upgrade would preserve your applications and data. Always have on hand
a backup of anything you can't afford to lose.

Windows 2000 is just as secure as Windows XP. Why would
you want to upgrade if everything is working fine the way
that it is. I can understand wanting to upgrade from a
Win9x machine. It seems like a lot of hassle just to have
the latest and greatest(?) software. That's my $.02 worth.

I can think of no reason to upgrade (I'm not convinced it IS an upgrade) a
perfectly working system?
If you do decide to upgrade for the sake of "consistency" then keep in mind
that the upgrade path from Windows 2000 Pro is to Windows XP Pro (not Home).
So, for the sake of consistency, you'd upgrade all three machines to XP Pro.

Remember: If'n it ain't broke, don't fix it.
