Install XP on second partiition

I have a Toshiba Satellite M55 notebook. The hard drive has developed
problems. I find that I can't format the drive, however if I make a
small first partition and then a second partition I can format the
second partition. Obviously the bad spots are at the beginning of the
drive.

I would like to install XP on to the second partition, however the
install program won't do this, telling me that it is the wrong kind of
partition. How can I get around this using the tools on the
installation CD? Is it possible to install XP on to the second
partition?

The Toshiba recovery CD is designed to only install
on the first partition, C: There is no way to overcome
this limitation. If you wish to install Windows XP
on a different partition, you'll need to purchase a
conventional "Full Version" of Windows XP.

I don't want to use the recovery CD. I want to use a normal XP CD. I
just need to know how to make the second partition useable,
