Install Wizard can't find Wireless Radio for Bluetooth 2.0 software

I'm trying to install the "Microsoft Wireless Optical Desktop Elite for
Bluetooth" keyboard (Model 1002)and mouse (Model 1001) on a Dell Precision
M70 notebook. It has Windows XP Pro SP2 installed.

I followed the instructions to:

1) Install the software from the setup CD provided with keyboard and mouse
(version 5.2).
2) Run the Bluetooth Connection Guide

The connection wizard starts and asks that the bluetooth transceiver dongle
be plugged in. Windows indicates that it has found new hardware.

The following messages are then displayed:

"This wizard helps you install software for: Wireless Radio for Bluetooth
2.0"
"If your hardware came with an installation CD or floppy disk, insert it
now:"
[I insert the same disk that was used to install the Intellitype &
Intellipoint 5.2 software]

"Please wait while the wizard searches... Wireless Radio for Bluetooth
2.0"
[There is a lot activity searching the CD]

"Cannot Install This Hardware"
"The hardware was not installed because the wizard cannot find the necessary
software"

I've tried using the Windows XP SP2 disk that came with the Dell Precision
M70 notebook during the installation. I've hooked the notebook up to the
internet to allow the Windows Update software to search for the software on
the internet. I'm not sure what driver it is looking for and where it might
be located.

Any thoughts on what might be going wrong with the installation?

When I run a program to setup software, I ignore the "new hardware"
wizard. If the setup program will not continue with the screen displayed, I
X it out. Don't use cancel because there is crosstalk between this dialog
and the setup program - the installation can fail.

Sharon, thanks for the reply.

Sorry, I didn't give enough detail. The connection guide starts after the
bluetooth transceiver dongle is plugged into the USB port. So, at this
point, windows is trying to install the bluetooth transceiver hardware and
it fails to find the software drivers for this piece of hardware. This
appears to be a necessary step.

The computer tech has given up after 4 hours of frustration. I'm close to
saying uncle and sending the keyboard and mouse back to the supplier. The
installation instructions are very limited.

No problem, Troy. Even if the hardware is inserted first and then the
installation program is run, you can close out the new hardware wizard. Or
just ignore it and run the software install.

Alternative: Take the CD that you got with the software drivers. Open it
Windows Explorer. Find the folder with the drivers for your flavor of
operating system. Remember this location. Go back to installing the
hardware and when the wizard prompts for the drivers, select that folder.
(Selecting a different folder or the root of the drive does not work - this
is normal).

Another alternative, when the wizard appears, try the "Have Disk" option.
Sometimes - but not always - this lets you get on with running the
installation program on that disk.

And one more ... Call the hardware manufacturer. Most hardware devices
include free support for installation issues.

NOTE: I have bluetooth on my tablet PC. There are two sets of directions in
the tablet's manual for installing hardware of this type. One is to be used
if I'm running with XP's bluetooth drivers. The other set is to be used
when running bluetooth with the Widcomm drivers and utilities. The
differences in procedure are nominal but apparently important enough that
it is included in the system documentation.
